Change the color, size, or shape of the last digit of the JAN code so that it's immediately recognizable.
公開日: 更新日:During the manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and display stages, it is essential to prevent product mix-ups.
In such cases, checking the last four digits of the JAN code is a common practice.
How about a proposal to help staff make quick decisions on-site? For the last four digits, assign a unique color to each number (e.g., 0 is red, 1 is orange), and for the final checksum, increase the font size of the digit itself, so mix-ups can be identified instantly.
Current Costs
Based on the following assumptions, approximately 9 million yen in costs are incurred annually.
- 5 inexperienced workers per day
- Average of 30 minutes per shift spent scrutinizing barcodes
- Hourly labor cost, etc. of 1,500 yen
- 240 operating days per year
- 10 business sites
Production Flow
- Assign colors, sizes, or font shapes to the numbers. Color might be suitable for color printing, while font shape might be better for black and white.
- Change the design of the last four digits when designing package and shipping materials.
- The last digit could have its size further altered (as a discrepancy in the last digit definitively indicates a mix-up).
- Verify if on-site staff can make instant judgments.
- Reflect the changes in the final design.
