What do you think about building a lot of data centers in rural areas of Japan?

Hello! 😃

As the amount of information on the internet grows day by day, and with the advent of AI, the demand for data centers has skyrocketed. It has truly skyrocketed. Exploded, in fact.

However, currently and in the near future, there is a severe shortage of data centers.

For example, in cutting-edge America, there has been a data center construction boom for a long time.

And in Japan, it's natural that various things are stalled due to the data center shortage.

Most data centers in Japan are urban

The locations of data centers are often not disclosed, so this is somewhat of an educated guess, but it seems that construction in urban areas is still strong in Japan.

For applications that prioritize brand and low latency, urban data centers are indeed strong.

On the other hand, for data storage, backup, and archiving purposes, what's needed is massive capacity and cost-effectiveness, so I think it would be better to disperse them in rural areas 💭

So, I feel like there could be various benefits to increasing data centers in rural areas.

For example:

  • Utilizing land effectively and having them pay taxes would enrich local finances.
  • It could create opportunities for employment and technical education.
  • Since servers can be stacked vertically, the environmental impact per area can be expected to be lower than that of mega solar farms.
  • Cooling efficiency can be improved by utilizing the cool climate.

And so on ☺️

If we can demonstrate overwhelming benefits to local communities and gain permission and resident understanding, couldn't the entire nation's needs be met by each region?

Specific things that seem necessary

  • Securing thick power lines and optical fibers
  • Cooling
  • Designing backup power supplies
  • Dialogue with local communities and human resource development

While it certainly requires initial investment and effort, I believe there is significant room for sustainable expansion if local resources and IT demand can be successfully connected ☺️

If urban and distributed data centers can effectively share roles, disaster resilience will also improve in times of need, and it will also vitalize local communities. Wouldn't it be reassuring if data centers could help revitalize regions, the internet, and all of Japan?
